Bard Dubrovnik

The picturesque coastal city of Dubrovnik, likely one of the most famous cities in Croatia, offers a whole variety of sights and experiences for its visitors – one of those most important sights are certainly the Dubrovnik Walls, and now, apart from walking around on them, you can sit in a bar situated right under them.

Unlike any other you’ve seen so far, the caffe bar “Bard” is located on the cliff, just under the Walls of Dubrovnik, and offers a magnificent panoramic view over the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea and the island of Lokrum. This is the hidden gem in the Old Town Dubrovnik that you can hardly just stumble upon – to get there, you will have to go through an opening in the walls...

This bar has a rather unique name – “Bard” – and the word itself has several meanings. The word is of Irish origin and means “singer” – medieval court or tribal Celtic poet singer of heroic songs in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Brittany. Accompanied by a musical instrument called the lyre, bards sang at festivals about divine and heroic deeds and undertakings, encouraging courage or emotion.

Tonći Tkalec has owned this bar for almost 25 years and often calls it his “child”. His inspiration for opening such a bar in Dubrovnik was the Maltese Cafe del Mar, glamorous club on the beach with a bar and a restaurant, offering an amazing view of the sea.
